BERLIN (AP) — The 74th Berlin International Film Festival opens Thursday with the world premiere of “Small Things Like These” starring man of the moment Cillian Murphy. Festival directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian, who will step down after this year, expressed their aim for “open dialogue” surrounding the war. The duo’s previous film, “Ballad of a White Cow,” premiered in competition in Berlin in 2021. Kenyan-Mexican actor Lupita Nyong’o will serve as the Berlinale’s first black jury president at this year’s festival. Isabelle Huppert will return to Berlin to collect her unclaimed lifetime achievement from 2022, when the French acting icon could not attend.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck remember the feeling of being the new kids at the Sundance Film Festival. “I remember being like, oh my God, this festival has been around 20 years, it’s such an old festival,” Boden said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. Their new film debuts Thursday, opening night of the 40th edition of the festival, at the storied Eccles Theater. “My favorite films are Sundance films,” Kaphar said. “That is really nourishing in a year when we’re acknowledging and marking this 40th edition of Sundance.”The Sundance Film Festival runs from Jan. 18 through Jan. 28.

CNN —Harrison Ford is officially in Marvel mode. On Tuesday, actor Anthony Mackie, who stars as Captain America in the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) “Captain America” franchise, shared a photo of himself hanging out with Ford on set. The retitling, from the previous name “Captain America: New World Order,” was also announced in an email from Disney on Tuesday. Ford is taking on the role of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, previously portrayed by William Hurt in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” followed by numerous MCU films including 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War” in 2018. It’s the first time that Ford has been pictured on the set of the new MCU movie.

Tom Holland is Spider-Man in the Sony-Marvel film "Spider-Man: No Way Home." LAS VEGAS — CinemaCon kicked off Monday with a major announcement from Sony Pictures — its upcoming "Kraven the Hunter" would mark the first R-rated Marvel film produced by the studio. "F--- yes, it's rated R," said Kraven himself Aaron Taylor-Johnson in a pretaped teaser for the film before Sony showed the first trailer for the profane and bloody action flick. Sony showed 14 minutes of the film — due out June 2 — to CinemaCon audiences, who laughed and cheered for the uniquely animated feature. Sony also showcased a clip from Jennifer Lawrence's upcoming R-rated drama "No Hard Feelings" to raucous applause.

CNN —The nominees for the 80th Golden Globe Awards were announced on Monday. Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva, two of the stars from “Lopez vs. Lopez,” announced the range of film and television nominees as selected by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Favored Oscars contender “The Banshees of Inisherin” led the film categories, with nominations including best musical or comedy film. It stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. The ceremony, which was not broadcast last January over controversy surrounding the HFPA, will return to NBC on Jan. 10.
